Participants will learn to create area models to represent a variety of multiplications and divisions from the stage 4 sections of the Mathematics K-10 syllabus, including fractions, decimals and algebraic terms. Time is also spent exploring different approaches to using area models, including concrete materials, drawn or annotated diagrams and using online interactive tools.
Participants will leave this course with an understanding of how area models are used to represent a variety of situations as well as skills to empower students with these ideas. In addition, participants are provided with a resource booklet containing lesson ideas including worksheets and links to the online tools used during the course.
Is this course for me?
This course is designed for teachers for teachers of stage 4 mathematics who are new to area models or are looking for resources and considerations for using them to effectively teach multiplication, division, expansion and factorisation. For teachers familiar with area models and looking for a bigger challenge, consider enrolling in the MANSW course Further Area Models.
