From Numbers to Meaning

This two-part professional learning series consists of two 90-minute sessions designed to provide practical, evidence-based strategies for teaching fractions, decimals, and percentages in Years 3 to 6.

Rationale
Mathematics plays a critical role in helping students interpret, analyse, and make sense of the world around them. However, for many learners, mathematics is experienced as a set of abstract procedures disconnected from their everyday lives. When students are unable to see relevance or purpose in what they are learning, engagement, confidence, and deep understanding are significantly diminished.

This professional learning course is designed to support teachers in bridging the gap between curriculum outcomes and meaningful learning experiences. By focusing on real-world contexts, inquiry, and authentic problem-solving, the workshop equips educators with practical strategies to make mathematics purposeful and accessible for all learners. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting students to engage with abstract concepts by anchoring them in contexts that reflect their interests, experiences, and the world they interact with beyond the classroom.
