2008 - 2009 MANSW EXECUTIVE
| David Keanan-Brown

President |
David joined the MANSW executive in 2001. He was elected Secretary in 2002, 2003, 2004. and elected Treasurer in 2005, 2006 and 2007. David was elected as MANSW President for 2008 and 2009. He has been teaching in both the public and private sectors since 1976 and for half of those years he has been coordinating Mathematics departments. He is currently Head Teacher Mathematics at MLC School Sydney. He has conducted educational research for AAMT, DET, AIS, and UWS . Lately his research has focused on the relatively radical idea of teaching middle school algebra using spreadsheets. He has presented workshop sessions for conferences run by AAMT and MANSW and also at school-based professional development days with an IT theme. | Holly Gyton

Holly was elected for another year as Vice President of MANSW in October 2008. A former MANSW President (2006 – 2007), she was first elected to the executive as an additional member in 2001 and was a member of the 2001 conference committee, particularly looking after the technology requirements for the conference in Leura. Since then Holly has also held the position of Convenor for the MANSW Annual Conferences held in Manly (2002), Brighton (2003), Mudgee (2004) and Wollongong (2005). She has assisted MANSW in designing the new website, in writing solutions for the HSC books and General Mathematics practice papers, responding to the Review of Stage 6 Mathematics courses and currently represents MANSW on the Stage 6 Mathematics BCC. Holly has also previously been involved in a range of other mathematical activities, such as the AIS Professional Development Committee, the AAMT ANU National Mathematics Summer School and has written resources for the K-10 Mathematics syllabus. Holly is the Director of Curriculum at SCEGGS, Darlinghurst.

Karen McDaid

Secretary |
Karen joined the MANSW committee as an executive member following the annual conference at Brighton-le-Sands in 2003 and has also been involved with the PAM committee since that time. At the 2006 Annual General Meeting, Karen was voted Secretary of MANSW and has been in that role since that time. She will be continuing in this capacity through the 2008 and 2009 year following her reappointment at the 2008 AGM. She is currently teaching at Caroline Chisholm College High School but began her career in Primary teaching choosing to make the move into high school in January 2006. Karen has also been a casual lecturer and tutor in mathematics education at the University of Western Sydney since 2005.
Karen has presented workshops at the last seven MANSW conferences and has been involved with presenting many of the in-services offered by the PAM committee for our primary membership.

| Mary Coupland

Treasurer |
Mary was elected to the MANSW Executive again at the 2007 AGM, this time in the position of Treasurer.
Mary is a senior lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney, where she has been a member of the Department of Mathematical Sciences since 1990. Before that she was a high school teacher of mathematics and a lecturer in mathematics education. She was a member of the MANSW Executive Committee 1982 - 1992 in various roles, and was made a Life Member of MANSW in 1996.
Mary has presented teaching ideas at many MANSW conferences. Her research interests include both the practical (how to integrate new computer tools into mathematics learning and teaching?) and the theoretical (what are the most productive links between theories of learning, psychology, and sociology?). Her current passion is finding, or maybe building, the bridges between those practical and theoretical issues. This continues the work conducted for her Ph D, which was awarded in 2004 by the University of Wollongong.

Cathy Attard

Manager Primary Program |
Cathy joined the MANSW executive in 2003 and served on the committee until 2007. She has returned to the executive in 2008 in the role of Manager, Primary Program, coordinating professional development sessions for our primary members. Cathy is the editor of the PAM newsletter and on the editorial committee for Square One, our primary journal.
Cathy has experience as a primary classroom teacher and is currently lecturing in Mathematics Education at the University of Western Sydney. She has a strong interest in motivation and engagement in mathematics and this is the subject of the PhD thesis she is currently working on. |
| Sue Thomson

Manager, Secondary Program |
Sue has returned to the role of Manager of Secondary Program after managing Student Services for several terms. Sue started her teaching career at Woolooware High School then Kirrawee High School. She was Mathematics co-ordinator at De La Salle College Cronulla in the 1990s, then Head of Mathematics and Director of Teaching and Learning at Hunter Valley Grammar School.
Since 2004 Sue has worked as a private consultant and author, providing professional development to schools and groups in a variety of areas. Sue’s main professional interest is quality teaching and learning together with teaching activities that bring the real world into classroom. |
Glenn Langford

Manager, Secondary Publications |
Glenn Langford was first elected to the MANSW Executive at the 2006 AGM, and was re-elected at the 2007 AGM in the position of Secondary Publications Manager. He is proud to have been a member of MANSW since his university days and looks forward to continued service to the Mathematics teaching community.
Glenn has taught at Cambridge Park, Riverside Girls, Beverly Hills Girls and Elderslie High Schools, the latter three as Head Teacher Mathematics. He feels fortunate to have had a wealth of experience working on projects for a large number of anagrammable organizations –NSWDET, DEST, AAMT, OBOS, NSWIT, SMH, AGQTP, and PTC. He even knows what they all stand for.
Glenn’s recent activities include teaching Mathematics education part-time at UWS Penrith and co-writing the middle-school Mathematics curricula for Abu Dhabi. He is currently Senior Policy Officer at the NSW Institute of Teachers. |
Alan White

Manager, Primary Publications |
Allan was elected to the MANSW Executive again at the 2007 AGM, in the position of Manager, Primary Publications. The position has oversight of the regular and additional publications for MANSW primary members. He is also editor of the primary journal Square One. Allan is currently working with pre-service undergraduate and postgraduate primary and secondary school teachers in the area of mathematics pedagogy, research, and curriculum. He taught for over twenty years in primary and secondary classrooms in three Australian states and has lived and taught in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Cook Islands and Brunei. His research interests focus on mathematics curriculum and pedagogical knowledge, teacher professional learning, teacher action theories (beliefs, attitudes, intentions) and the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process. |
| Sharon London

Manager, Student Services |
Sharon’s teaching experiences have been in a range of government and private high schools. She was Head Teacher Mathematics at Bradfield College for 4 years, before accepting a contract teaching in Brunei. Sharon has also lectured part-time in Mathematics Teacher Education at the University of Sydney since 1987.
Being an active member of MANSW since 1989, Sharon began the HSC Lectures in the early 90’s and assisted with developing sponsorship and marketing opportunities for the annual conferences. Sharon was elected as an Executive Member for 2006 and 2007, served as Secondary Programs Manager in 2008 and has taken the role of Student Services Manager for 2009
Sharon is presently writing mathematics, numeracy and financial literacy content for websites, and is also involved in researching technology in Mathematics teaching and learning.

Scott was first elected to the MANSW Executive at the 2005 AGM. He has worked at Shore, MLC School, Sydney and is currently the Head of Mathematics at SCEGGS Darlinghurst.
He has organized the MANSW Conferences since 2008 and has been actively involved in the production of MANSW HSC solutions and other professional development activities |

Nikky was first elected to the MANSW Executive at the 2005 AGM. She was elected to the position of Manager, Secondary Publications at the 2006. In 2008 and 2009 Nikky has been an Executive Member. Nikky has taught at Pennant Hills High School and is currently the Head Teacher of Mathematics at North Sydney Girls' High School. |

Heather was first elected to the MANSW Executive at the 2007 AGM. She has taught at a range of public high schools including Leumea High and Girraween High and is currently Head Teacher of Mathematics at Winmalee High. |
Cath Whalan

Executive Member |
Cath was first elected to the MANSW Executive at the 2007 AGM. She has taught at a range of public high schools and was head teacher at Blacktown Girls HS. From 2003 - 2006 she was Mathematics 7-12 Consultant for Northern Sydney Region DET. In 2006 she completed her Masters of Education at the University of Sydney, focusing on teaching and curriculum studies and the education of mathematically promising students. She is currently Head Teacher of Mathematics at Hornsby Girls' High School. |
| Margaret Bigelow

Professional Officer |
Margaret has had a long and varied career in Mathematics Education in both government and non-government schools. Her experience includes classroom teaching, Head of Department and other executive roles within schools. From 2006, Margaret was employed by the Office of the Board of Studies to be the Senior Project Officer for the Review and Development of the Stage 6 Mathematics courses in NSW. In 2009, she accepted the position as the Professional Officer for MANSW.
Margaret has played a significant role in MANSW since 1997. She was President in 2000 and 2001 and Vice President in 2002 and 2003. Margaret has been the conference convenor for a number of state and national conferences. She has been a presenter at in-service courses, has written articles for professional magazines and has been actively involved in all aspects of MANSW. She was a AAMT councillor from 1998 until 2006 and was part of the inaugural committee to establish the National Professional Teaching Standards Council.
Margaret has been an HSC marker since 1995 and is now the Supervisor of Marking for General Mathematics. She was awarded a Professional Teaching award in 2001. |
